The Dangers Of Prescription Pain Killers: A Tribute To Brenda Jones

This is by far, the hardest post I've ever had to write.  I've tried to start it off and on, over the past few hours and each time my eyes would fill with tears to where everything just looked like a blurry mess.  Finally, I took a deep breathe, audibly exhaled, and I've started writing.  Dear Lord, please help me get through this post, and give me the correct words to properly convey my thoughts and message.  This is a subject I've briefly touched on a few times over the past four years.  Now, I need to write indepth about it.

Meet Brenda Jones.  Brenda was a fellow chronic pain sufferer, and a cancer warrior.  She was one of us. More than that, Brenda was my friend.  A true friend.  She honestly worried and cared not only about me, but about any one she knew that may be suffering along with her.  I can't tell you how many times Brenda would comment on a facebook post of mine, making sure I was ok and praying that a current pain flare would quickly end for me.  She'd send me messages off and on, checking in on me, as I did her.  I've never known a person to just ....love ....more than Brenda did.

What mattered the most to Brenda?  Her family.  I cannot begin to tell you how much her son Jordan, her daughter-in-law Natalie, and the apple of her eye, her granddaughter Koralee meant to her.  I just thought that I'm a proud grandma.  I've honestly never seen anyone more proud of a grandchild, than Brenda was of Koralee.  Just look at the pride beaming from her eyes, the very first time she held this little beauty:

Brenda had one secret from me though.  She was addicted to prescription pain killers.  Brenda passed away, 2 days ago from an accidental overdose.  Her son Jordan, walked into her bedroom and found her. Brenda absolutely would not have wanted her son, to have to find her like that.  She didn't want to die.  She wanted the very same thing that you and I want.  She just wanted to be pain-free.

This whole incident has taken my breath away.  It's left me crying off and on.  It's made me angry.  Most of all, it's scared me.  It scares me, because it just as easily could have been you, or me.  I read of Brenda's passing, sitting in the lobby of my pain management clinic, waiting to be taken to the operating room to have neves burned in my neck under sedation.  -Anything to try and relieve the pain in at least one area of my body.  Anything, right?!  Most of us would give anything to try and live a half-way pain free life.  To have a half-way normal life again.  That's why many of us take prescription drugs.

Brenda's son Jordan, and beautiful daughter-in-law Natalie

No one who truly suffers from a chronic pain condition, sets out to be a drug seeker.  No one who truly suffers from a chronic pain condition thinks that they'll become addicted to prescription meds.  To be honest, most that are addicted, probably don't even realize that they have developed a problem.  This blogs facebook page, has over 17,000 followers and I have had people say to me on the page, "I'll never become addicted to narcotics, because I'm not a druggy.  I just need something to help me function without so much pain."  I've had people get angry at me, when I've responded to a question on whether someone should try to get pain meds or not, that in my opinion a person should hold off as long as possible.

Over the years, I've had doctors ask me if I wanted narcotics.  I always told each and every doctor that I wanted to wait for as long as possible, before starting narcotics.  Would my life have been easier and more normal if I had accepted them?  It sure would have been.  I didn't though, for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, I've hated medicine all my life.  Even as a teenager my mom would fight me to get me to even take a Tylenol.  Secondly, the thought of addiction scared me.  Thirdly, I knew that if I took a certain pain pill for so long, it would lose it's effectiveness and I'd have to be upped on the dosage.  Eventually, I'd top out on the dosage and have to move up the tier to a stronger narcotic.  Again, it'd lose it's effectiveness.  This would be a cycle that would continue and eventually I'd be out of any pain killer that would work.  -There's only so many out there.  The illnesses I have, I will have for the rest of my life.  I didn't want to be in my 50's, and already have run the gammit of drugs available to help me.  They say that Fibro isn't progressive, but I beg to differ.  My symptoms have worsened in severity over the years.  My doctor even told me last year, "Amy, your health is declining.  I can not only see it physically, but also the toll it's taking on you mentally."

Grandma's Pride & Joy

According to DrugAbuse.gov, around 116 million people suffer from Chronic Pain, in the United States.  (you can read the full article by clicking HERE)  PainMed.org says "Prescription drugs are the second-most abused category of drugs in the United States, following marijuana."

They also say "From 1998 to 2008, the proportion of all substance abuse treatment admissions age 12 or older who reported any pain reliever abuse increased more than fourfold."

Along with this sobering statistic: "Prescription painkillers are considered a major contributor to the total number of drug deaths. In 2007, for example, nearly 28,000 Americans died from unintentional drug poisoning, and of these, nearly 12,000 involved prescription pain relievers."

A new report came out today, stating that singer Prince's death was confirmed to be an accidental overdose of Fentanyl.  Article About Prince

This past February, after carefully considering everything for years, I went ahead and started on narcotics.  I take one 5-325mg of Norco a day.  It truly does help my pain, but every single day I have the "what if I get addicted" thought in the back of my head.  I have the "what happens when these stop working" question lingering in the background.  My beautiful Brenda's tragedy has me scared.  It hurts me beyond belief.  Never, ever think that you're above this.  Never think that this can't happen to you, because it can.

I want you to read part of Jordan's announcement of his sweet mother's passing:  "Addiction is powerful, no matter what you are addicted to. I hope that if anything positive can come from the passing of my mother, it is that prescription medication addiction is no different than any other drug. If you are unable to accept you have a problem and do not receive help, the end result is the same. Death is unavoidable, and comes in many different ways. However prescription drug addiction may seem not as bad as meth or cocaine, but as a direct reflection on my mother's life I have watched her die slowly, a little more everyday. So if you know someone suffering from this, try to get them help. I ask you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not be an enabler! No matter what you have to do, regardless of the friendship you may lose or how mad the person may be when told no, DO NOT ENABLE THEM! "

How eloquently, yet truthful and heartbreaking is that plea?  That could be your son or daughter making that post.  Please, please if you even think you may have developed an addiction to your prescription meds, seek help.  Please don't be embarrassed.  Doctors know that those who start taking meds for chronic pain aren't out to try and become addicted.  It just happens sometimes.  Please, don't EVER take more than what's prescribed to you.  If you're in so much pain that you just can't handle it, make a trip to the E.R. or your doctor's office and let a physician try to get it under control for you.  Don't take a chance.  Your life is more valuable than you realize.  If you think you may have a problem, here's a national toll-free hotline number that you can call for help:  National Toll-free number: 1-800-821-4357

Koralee, BB may not be able to hold you in her arms or smooch your precious cheeks anymore, but she'll always be with you and looking out for you.  You were her whole world, precious girl.  Everytime you see a butterfly, know that BB is there with you.

To my sweet, sweet Brenda ....you are finally free from the pain.  I know you're with us and know the sadness we feel.  My life is truly better from knowing you, Sweetheart.  I'll never forget you.  Fly-high being pain free, Angel.

  1. Sorry for your loss but one word that you forgot to mention in your powerful story is that she passed away from a ,"accidental" overdose. I have been talking narcotics for pain for 40 yrs and are on the same dose and medication and have never overdosed or gotten addicted. I take "medication" not drugs.by using the word "drugs" instead of medication when one talks about a patient..you are changing how people perceived the patient. Drug addicts use "drugs" Patients use Medication...Stop demonizing patients that use and are very responsible with medication that provides relief of pain and gives us a quality of life that we won't have if people keep up with this out of control media brainwashing and people who don't educate themselves on the responsible and proper use of medications.

    1. I DID use the word "accidental" Here is the passage: "Brenda had one secret from me though. She was addicted to prescription pain killers. Brenda passed away, 2 days ago from an accidental overdose." You'll find it located right below the photo of her holding her newborn granddaughter. Anywhere that the word "drug" was used, has the word "prescription" in front of it. I myself, only used the term one time. Some quotes I have in the post, uses the term ...but again the word "prescription" is in front of it. In no way, shape, or form was I belittling or attempting to belittle, any chronic pain patient who uses prescription pain medication. I admitted in the post that I myself use it. My intent is not to "demonize" any one who uses prescription narcotics in any way, whether they use it "responsibily" as you stated or not. Because if not, I know it isn't their fault ...they were just trying to find some relief. I most certainly have educated myself on the subject, and take offense to just about every word you've commented on here. I applaud you that you've taken the same medication for 40 years and are on the same dose. Ask any doctor or read any study ....that is EXTREMELY rare. My own pain clinic physician even told me straight up when prescribing to me, that eventually this dosage will not work and will have to be upped. -And sweetie? Medication IS a drug. A prescribed drug. My intent is that if ANYONE feels they're becoming depended on a medication, they seek help and don't allow it to accidently take their life!

  2. When the pain specialist told me that morphine was the next step to control my pain, I got scared and quit ask pain meds. I work out every day, I started with walking literally 3 minutes and increased by one minute every 7 days. It's been a couple of year s and amazingly my flares are now rare instead of normal life. It was horrible and hard but I don't want to die and I could see how easily that could happen. I don't know if my path would work for anyone else, only that it worked for me and literally changed my life. I still hurt every day, but now I can do so much more and I am no longer afraid to sleep. RIP Brenda

  7. I have been on oxy for a few years for chronic pain. I have fibro, osteoarthritis, and other issues. I'm in the process of weaning off it. I just got sick of the chronic GI issues it caused and some people making me feel "guilty" for taking it. I don't believe I'm an addict. I have never felt a high. I do know everyone's body becomes hooked in a short time of continuous use. I'm into week two and have 3 more weeks before I'm totally off it. Even tapering the withdrawal is tough. I have no idea how I will handle my chronic pain, but hopefully we can find something that works. I exercise 6 days a week and I've lost 35 pounds and hope to keep losing. I'm now overweight, but not obese. My pain is usually better in warmer weather. When winter rolls around who knows what the pain will be, but I hope to stay away from narcotics as long as possible. God comfort you in the loss of your friend.

  9. Amy: I stand behind you and agree with everything you said in your post. I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. If people would realize how common it is to have an accidental overdose, they might turn down the prescription drugs in favor of something else. I have never had problems with addiction but I had a younger sister who died in a car accident after taking her prescribed medication. She had a problem with drugs and alcohol her entire adult life. I was married to a man who had surgery on his foot and got addicted to prescription pain killers and muscle relaxers. Opioids weren't made to use for chronic pain. They were made to help with short-term acute pain, like the pain you have following surgery. They don't work for chronic pain, either. You have to keep increasing the dose to get the same effect and eventually, they don't work at all. This is a real problem and I salute you for posting your experience and honoring your friend at the same time. I was put on Fentanyl for Fibromyalgia pain in 2010. I had never heard of this drug. I used the patch as prescribed. It allowed me to push myself beyond what I would normally be able to do, but I also looked like someone who was dying after just a few months of taking the medication. I lost a lot of weight and my skin was gray. I knew I needed to get Fentanyl out of my life. I didn't know that cutting the patch in half would be dangerous. I wanted to wean myself off the drug so I cut a patch in half, in an attempt to get half as much medication. Now I know that cutting a patch causes the medicine to be released all at once, instead of over a period of time. I fell asleep on my couch for many hours. It's a miracle that I survived my accidental overdose. After that, I quit Fentanyl cold turkey. That wasn't a great idea, either, but I survived it and now I can tell others about the dangers of Fentanyl. Fentanyl was made for terminal cancer patients, to keep them comfortable until they die. It wasn't supposed to be a drug that you quit. I am lucky that I was able to get myself off this drug. I stand by my belief that it shouldn't be given to people aren't terminal. I haven't taken prescription pain medication for 6 years. I still deal with a lot of pain every day but I know that prescription opioids are not the answer. If anyone thinks they aren't addicted to their prescription pain medication, all they have to do is try to get themselves off the drug. I was told that I should have gone to a rehab facility and had professional help to withdraw from Fentanyl. Dependence and addiction are not different. I am mad at doctors who give these medications to their patients so willingly and then call them drug seekers when they become addicted. Something needs to change. Too many people are dying from accidental overdoses. This dialogue is so important. I'm sorry that Prince died. I'm sorry that Barbara died. I'm sorry that my sister died. I'm trying to make a difference by telling people about my experience with prescription pain killers for chronic pain. It's good to make people think about what they are doing, even if they get defensive about it. If your body can't function without pain medication, you are addicted. If you think you are addicted, you can get help and do something about it. Most likely, the medication isn't helping anyway and the side effects and long-term effects of the medication are probably taking a toll on your internal organs. No need for anyone to feel attacked or judged. It's just something to think about. I'm not better than anyone else. I've lost a lot of people who were young to prescription medications. I only wish to help others by sharing my experience and learn from others by reading about theirs. I pray for all of us, that we might get some pain relief. RIP Barbara.

  10. I, unfortunately, did not know Brenda well. She was a teammate of mine but never really had the chance to chat with her. Debbie, I give you so much credit for writing this and showing us that, yes, no one is infallible when taking any kind of medication. I loved the closeness you and Brenda shared and the utmost caring you showed each other. My thought and prayers are with you as well as with Brenda's entire family. Rest in peace Brenda, be that angle flying high and watching over your loved ones.

  11. I salute your courage in writing this post and respect the fears you have about opioids and prescription meds in general. One thing you learn about when you get Fibro is to research and respect the meds you're given. This is not something you can shrug off because everyone is different. We react differently to the same meds and some can use a medication that others can't. YOU have to be the one responsible.

That being said, I hope it calms you somewhat to know that I've been on the same dose of Narco that you're taking now for 12 years. I've never needed to increase the dosage and at one doctor's request I came off of it to ensure I wasn't addicted to it. I was uncomfortable for two days, but after that I was fine... except that nothing else came close to easing my pain with acceptable side effects. It is possible to be dependent on a drug without being addicted. Ask anyone with insulin dependent diabetes. Don't be afraid. You're a very caring and intelligent woman, working with a good doctor. I know you'll have the strength and good sense to deal with your pain and live the best life possible.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend. The world is a sadder place without her, I'm sure. Wishing you peace and consolation.

  14. [i must truly apologize about how insanely long my comment is, I have never had so much flood my soul, it's actually continued in lower comments.)
I came across your Fibro blog tonight after considering if I could even start a blog about my situation. I read about the loss of your friend and am so very sorry for your loss. Fibromyalgia has claimed all but one of my friends so I can't imagine what life would be like without his over 20 years of friendship.

You mentioned putting off opioids medications as long as you could and I applaud you in doing so. But I also know there can come a time where you must do what you have to do just to survive. About 12 years ago I realized the fatigue I had was not something others around me my age were experiencing. I really didn't know anything about fibromyalgia at that time. I was in my 30s, The top producing agent in my real estate firm and nationally ranked within our franchise which I will say this or that time was the largest privately held real estate company in the world. But over one 4 month period I was hit by symptoms that had me bedridden and I just kept hope I'd return to the 12 hour days I'd been sloshing through for years. But I never returned to my great private corner office. I for the next year depended on my assistant to show properties while I did my best to work from home. But that was not cutting it either. I ended up retiring early. Now I did take pain medication but when I ended up working from home I stopped taking them thinking they might be causing me issues. And I was on strong pain meds because the Vicodin and such I kept bringing prescriptions back to the doctor. If a medication is not working why take it. Well back then they started slowly and at 40g twice daily of OxyContin my pain was manageable but when I worked from home I just wanted to try without it. 3 years later I was out of the house an hour or so a day and even took lots of trips where I ended up sitting in a hotel room but going out at least a couple hours a day. Never realized it could get worse. But all hell has befallen me.

  15. Continued from previous post.
(I am sorry this is so long. But will be getting to addiction, loss and will tie back I promise. I'm having to do this by voice dictation so as to even try to give voice to Loss, Pain Medication, and the ease of overdosing, etc...). Well about 6 years ago I had made the decision to start back on pin meds. I had to start out slow til my dosage was figured out. I was started after tons of things I tried on Methadone twice a day. Within a week I had the first pain free day in my life. I had found the miracle for me or so I thought. After a week I started feeling a bit of pain but I was not bothered since I had endured years of agony. But soon they boost the Methadone up and it was better then not so much. I was given Oxycodone as break through pain meds as most on long acting have breakthrough pain meds. But the methadone was having a sedating effect and I thought this is no like so I tapered down to half my dose. Was in pin but could get by. If it got to bad I had my breakthrough medicine that worked great but really only a few hours. But all good. One day I read about someone dying in my town from prescription pills and just decided to research all of my medicine closer. OMG so many deaths from Methadone because it builds up in your body, has long lifespan and I never took it early or more than prescribed I was terrified of this medication. It was just to scary for me. Now I hear more about oxycodone but the people who I hear about passing are taking more than prescribed or in ways it's not intended, or many cant do without it and if it fails on them they turn to heroine and their addiction is usually their demise. Well my Doctor said I was fine on my methadone but I wanted off and ended up tapering down and within 30 days I was off (way to quick coming off 40 mg a day for most, so don't follow my lead). My Doctor saw I was scared of this stuff so he tried me on Opana and I was in horrible pain, Over a few months I went on Fentanyl patches, started at 12.5mcg every 3 days then 25, them 75 and finally change every 2day then try daily. I ended up on 100 mcg new patch daily and it didn't work any better than a 12 mcg patch every 3 days. I tapered off really quick and I mean a couple weeks from 100mcg down to not any. I brought a box and a half of patches back and destroyed them at my Doctors. I have relied solely on my breakthrough medication that has remained at same dosage for years now and I don't know how I'd have dealt without it going off Methadone and months of trying things that didn't work. I was about to honestly give up and stop all meds and well I have lost all friends and my Mom died in 2012 and my Dad in 2014 2 years to the exact day in April apart. No family left and I was giving up and I won't continue telling where that was heading. But my Dr. Tried one last medication called Levorphanol and it's rare at pharmacies. Mine comes from 5 states away. It's not new just wasn't marketed well years ago, now some Doctors have tried it and it works similar to Methadone so it does relieve some of my pain and my breakthrough medicine is now working better in return. I researched this medicine and it's scary but not as much as methadone (and yes I know it's rarely used so not as much data online) I'm taking just a medium dosage and for me it is just enough to see possibilities. I just now need to conquer all this fatigue and get to the bottom of this pain, get off these medicines that are just a bandaid but one I thank God for daily.

  16. (Continued from previous 2 post, this is last.......so sorry again)
I see the news on heroin addiction and I admit most stories I hear start with prescription opiates prescribed for legitimate pain but meant for short usage. Apparently many many people get addicted and I'm not going to say it's from abusing the legit prescription because I don't know what happened but it started with prescription pain medication, morphed into heroin and ultimately deaths for so many. I don't want to blame prescription pain medication as I need it so badly to just manage my situation. (Which is also neuropathy to to diabetes, and some other conditions that in there own are a nightmare) but I see and hear all these overdose stories and if it's not from prescription medicine it in most cases started out from them. Sure it started out from some form of abuse of these medicines but I will not turn my head and deny the connection. Now add to that people prescribed medication that they end up passing away from...... It's so easy when you suffer the fog of fibromyalgia to forget you took your meds or take it to early or someway get mixed up and you meet your maker. Especially on Methadone. I was and am so careful I divide my medicine up in weekly batches then every Sunday I put it in 7 SEPARATE daily containers marked Mon-Sun and each has 4 little "bays" I put my dosage of regular daily plus my long acting pain Med in appropriate sections. This insures or better helps insure if I ever had doubt about taking my meds I can keep from possibly taking to much. I go a step farther with my breakthrough medication which is I'm sure people will say is overboard. I NEVER keep it where another living soul can get to it short of a blow torch and getting past an alarm and my chihuahua protector "Belle" (I owe that dog my life because ..... Well I'm sure some who might read this far will understand) Anyway it is in a safe and it's a really good floor mounted gun safe mounted in a way it will be sold with this house cause it's pretty permanent. In the safe I take another pill container with 5 separate pill bays I've labeled 1-5. I place 1 pill in each bay and when I must take breakthrough medication I mark the date and time it was taken on a marker board on inner safe door in a slot marked 1-5. So if I ever didn't log a pill my pill bay and marker board numbers wouldn't match up. It's overkill I'm sure but I've heard so many stories of people taking just one pill to many for whatever reason. Fibro brain fog is real and I can't remember the simplest things on some days and I know it's worse for others. IF YOU PLEASE TRY MY SYSTEM OR DEVELOP YOUR OWN REDUNDANT SAFETY PLAN IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE, PLEASE. It also will keep others from having access by seriously locking it up. An addict would probably shock you at how far they will go to get your meds if they find out you have it. So don't let anyone who doesn't need to know about your meds and protect them you might save if not someone else's life, your own.

Again I'm so sorry for your loss of a true friend, how she was passed, and for the sometimes truly hard decision to start on medications that can be so controversial.

I wish you all the best and forgive me for such a long post. I have never told this in a manner where I have people that can understand and that something I might say someone needed to hear.

Chronic pain is terrible to deal with and so many people resort to pain killers because they desperate and in an extreme amount of pain. My father was also addicted to pain killers and eventually took his life at 62.

I never imagined fibromyalgia has a natural cure not until i contacted him and he assured me my son will be fine.
