Self-Sabotage. Most people have heard this term before in their lives, but what is self-sabotage?! According to Dictionary.com, self-sabotage is defined as "the act or habit of behaving in a way that interferes directly with one's own goals, well-being, relationships, etc., as by comfort eating, procrastination, or lashing out at others". In other words, blowing up your entire world yourself lol.
Self-sabotage is way more common than people think it is. All four of my children were active in different sports but one they all had in common, was competitive judo/jujitsu. My dad, who is 85 years old now, used to go to a whole lot of their tournaments and he'd always tell them right before their match "Now don't go out there and beat yourself. If you lose, lose by making your opponent beat you". He also said that a LOT to my oldest son Cody, who was also a high-school state wrestler, college wrestler, and MMA cage fighter after his college wrestling days. -Yes, the photo below is from one of his MMA fights, and yes, he's the one on top facing the camera lol.
Although Cody had an amazing overall sports career, even he admits that at times, he was guilty of "beating himself". Guilty of "self-sabotage". This phenomenon of self-sabotage can be so common for many different reasons. Sometimes people self-implode because they're afraid of failure. Sometimes it's because they're afraid of success. It can happen if a person has low self-esteem. Sometimes perfectionism plays into self-sabotage. It could be, because of past experiences from childhood where a child had received negative messages from caregivers. Cognitive dissonance, having a conflict between your personal belief and your actions, can lead to self-sabotaging behavior. Sometimes, it's due to unconscious survival strategies. There are just so, so many reasons why a person can consciously or unconsciously self-sabotage.
Do you ever feel like you're a hamster stuck running on a wheel? If you find that you have that feeling with some aspect of your life, or if you find yourself procrastinating on a task, you may be guilty of self-sabotage. Do you engage in negative self-talk? Frequently engaging in self-critical or pessimistic thoughts can undermine confidence and motivation. If you avoid or "forget" responsibilities, even when they're crucial, it can be a sign of self-sabotage.
Self-sabotage can lead to career and academic setbacks. It can strain important relationships. It often exacerbates feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. The constant cycle of setting goals and failing to achieve them can lead to a sense of helplessness and self-doubt. If you engage in self-destructive behaviors like comfort eating, substance abuse, or neglecting self-care it can cause serious physical health consequences too. This is especially true for people suffering from chronic pain conditions such as Fibromyalgia. Self-sabotage also leads to financial difficulties due to poor decision-making and lack of follow-through. Overall, self-sabotage leads to a reduced quality of life. It prevents you from reaching your full potential and enjoying a fulfilling and satisfying life. It creates a vicious cycle of failure and disappointment that is difficult to break. So there you are, still stuck running on that damn hamster wheel!
There are many strategies that you can use to overcome the self-sabotage cycle though. You can build self-awareness by utilizing mindful meditation to become more aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. You can journal! Write down your thoughts and experiences daily. Then reflect on your actions and emotions to identify recurring themes and triggers. Set aside time regularly to reflect on your goals, dreams, achievements, and areas for improvement. Ask yourself questions like, 'What am I avoiding/" or "Why did I react that way?". You also can seek constructive feedback from trusted friends, family, or colleagues. They can provide insights into behaviors that you may not even notice yourself!
Cultivate self-compassion by treating yourself with kindness. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend! When you make a mistake, remind yourself that it's OK to be imperfect. Recognize common humanity within yourself. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, experiences difficulties and setbacks in life. I think that's the biggest impact that was made within me during the filming of my episode of Dragnificent, on TLC. There was an emotional moment of me telling a story that negatively impacted my life and self-esteem, and one of those beautiful Queens started crying. Afterward, she and I had a conversation about how my story dredged up feelings for her, of her going through the exact same experience I had been describing. My mind was literally exploding at that second! I was thinking "What?! Wait! This beautiful, successful woman has had the exact same feelings and emotions that I've had?". It was really a huge "Ah-Ha" moment for me. When everything is cut & dried, no matter how rich or poor or successful or ...how stuck on a hamster wheel we are, we are ALL "just people" at the end of the day. We all have the same feelings, emotions and fears. We all want unconditional love and support and acceptance. We all have hopes & dreams. At that point in time, I started using a reference that I remind myself of a lot; "Every person, is a person". It sounds simple, but really, it's not. It's deep, yet it's so very true! You always should try to be mindful of your negative thoughts and emotions, without letting them define you. Practice deep breathing or gentle self-talk to soothe yourself. You also can practice loving-kindness meditation. Engage in meditations that focus on sending love and compassion to yourself and others. You could also write a self-compassion letter to yourself or visualize a compassionate response to a challenging situation.

So what makes my blog a little different from others out there, is that I always keep it real. I don't hold back and tell it like it is. That's why I'm telling you all, Fibromyalgia is all in our heads. Ok, ok, I know that at least a few people reading this immediately jumped to conclusions and probably started getting pissed when they just read that lol. I don't mean it in the way that one jumping to conclusions would think. I'm not saying it's made up or fake, I live with it on the daily. I know how real it is. Our pain though, is signals that reach different parts of the brain, then the brain tells us that we hurt in a certain area.
There was a new study published in Scientific Reports on January 10, 2018 that addresses the brain activity in patients with Fibromyalgia. The study looks at explosive synchronization (ES) as the reason. What is ES? Well, you've got me. I completely understand all of the scientific talk in this study don't really understand it at all. Even googling ES and wanting to rip my hair out while gouging out my eyes reading for about an hour, I still don't really understand it. The conclusion is that "we suggest that this could serve as a novel theoretical framework and quantitative approach to modulating chronic pain through the conversion of an ES brain network to a non-ES network using brain stimulation methods."
This was a small, phase II study conducted at the University of Michigan. Although the study had it's limitations, it gives HOPE that maybe some day a cure will be found. I'm just thankful that no matter how limited, some research was done. We need so, so much more research. If you've been a follower of my blog/facebook page for very long, you know that the lack of money and research into this uncurable monster we live with absolutely infuriates me!
At the beginning of every year I always say "Maybe this will be the year that our cure is found." Well folks, maybe 2018 will be the year that our cure is found. We can only HOPE and pray. Yes, HOPE is still my favorite word. Without HOPE, we don't have anything.

Do you ever have one of those days? You know, one of those days that seem bad from the moment you crack your eyes open? Well, that's been me today. I finally fell asleep last night this morning around 5am or so. I heard the kids come home around noon and cracked my eyes open not wanting to move. From there, it just seems as if it's gone downhill.
I haven't been able to stop yawning all day long. As for waking up as tired as when I went to bed? I've been more tired then when I went to bed. My head has killed me all day. I've felt as if someone yanked the plug out of the electrical socket on me. I haven't been able to concentrate on anything for more then about 5 minutes at a time, and doing anything has caused extreme pain in my back. My knees? Yeah, I feel and sound like an 80 or 90 year old woman every time I go from a sitting to a standing position. I have to use the arms on the chair to help pry myself up, moaning outloud in pain as I do so.
Pain or not, I was bound and determined to make supper tonight. My daughter loves my homemade broccoli, rice and cheese casserole and had asked me to make it for her. Once I had it ready to baked, and shoved it into the oven, I came back in here as quickly as I could with walking hunched over and collapsed into my computer chair. I was gasping from the pain in my back and was near tears. After resting for about 30 minutes I got up and went in to bread and fry the meat. Again, at about 1/2 through, I was in so much pain I couldn't hardly stand it. Trying to hurry, I ended up trying to fry my little finger along with the meat! Yep, while dropping a piece of meat into the boiling, bubbling grease, I stuck my little finger right down into it!! I'm not gonna lie, that made me gasp and say a few curse words under my breath as I was flipping on the cold water in which to drown my finger in. This meat,...this dang breaded and fried in HOT oil meat, was a new recipe. Guess what? It. Was. Disgusting. So, I didn't even burn my finger over something that was good. It wasn't even worth it in the slightest LOL. I took one bite and threw mine away. Yuck!
So, I'd been weighing the cost of whether I should print out one copy of all of my seminar handouts then take them to Staples to have all the copies printed or if I should just print them all from home. Since the dead beat....or I mean, the man, that I'm still legally married to hasn't paid me one single penny of child support or alimony since May money has been super tight to say the least. Somehow, he had the money to take himself and his girlfriend to Cedar Point last Saturday, but miraculously he doesn't know "when" he can send my daughter and I any support according to the text her sent her. So, I decided that it may take longer, but would be more cost effective for me in my situation to just print them here at home. A new black printer cartridge is only $11.99 for me, because I buy refurbished. That sounded a ton better to me then paying out $50-$75 for copies at the store. With the day I had been having I should have known better. It printed a few copies, then it said that something was wrong with the ink cartridge. We took it out a couple times and reseeded it, to no avail. I turned it off then back on. Nope, nothing. Still that damn flashing yellow light. We unplugged it and let it sit for awhile. Still nothing. I removed the cartridge once again and used a damp coffee filter with bottled water and wiped the contacts down on the cartridge and inside the printer. Finally! It worked again! The catch? I'd set it for 40 copies and 1 would come out. Yep, one. Do you have any idea how easy hard it is to keep track of how many copies you've printed when you're sitting there clicking the print button ...waiting on the page to print ...dropping it into a pile ...then doing it all again? With a horrible headache? Being in pain and yawning all the while??!
I still tolerated it and kept trying to plug along. Next thing I know, it's printing the page as if it's printed over it a hundred couple of times. What was wrong with it this time?? I don't have a clue. I gave up. I threw in the towel on it for now. Maybe I'll try again in a bit. Maybe I won't. Maybe I'll find the money to go have the copies made rather then doing them themselves. I don't know. I don't know anything today/tonight! The only thing I do know tonight is that it's been a bad day and I'm sick of it! I'm ready for tomorrow to get here, as it'll have to be a better day, wouldn't it?
I opened a new tab, played this song, and wrote this whining, complaining blog post! This song always helps me to feel better when I listen to it and sing along! Oh yeah, be sad I mean happy that this isn't a video post because I guarantee you that I'd never make it as a singer LOL. I do much better at sitting here complaining then I do singing. Alas, it's a feel good song that I love. Well, back to attempt the printing process yet again. I'm quickly running out of time. The seminar is Saturday. Two measly days away. I need to get crackin'!
My illness (all of them) may be invisible, but my voice isn't! May is Fibromyalgia Awareness Month, along with several other neuro-immune disorders. What better month for me to start working hard to break into public speaking? This week I'm going to start contacting groups, organizations, universities, etc. to introduce myself, my mission, and to try and book a seminar. It'll never happen unless I make it happen. If you know of a church, organization, university, medical group, etc. that may be able to utilize my service, please either give me their contact information, or give them mine. My seminar will be "Living With Chronic Pain/Invisible Illness - A Patient's View". Let's work together and try to educate as many people, med students, lawyers, politicians, researchers, etc that we can! Let's take a stand and DEMAND attention!
May 11th (1 day before the official Fibro Awareness DAY) will be only 3 months that The FibroFrog Blog and FB Fan Page have been in operation. In that short time, we've already reached a Google Page Rank of 2 (which is GREAT for this short of a time period), my Klout Score has Sky Rocketed to a 60, and we're at almost 1200 FB Fans. I've had several mentions and DM's on Twitter. Several blog posts/articles have been featured in many online newspapers, as well. I feel that's phenominal, and proves that there are MANY of us out there, and many "interested" people. I'm passionate to educate on this subject, and feel that public speaking and seminars on this, is what I'm supposed to do. I feel like this is the reason I got sick in the 1st place. I'm asking all of YOU to be my personal agents and help me be heard! Spread the word about our illness, about me, and about my seminar. Let's let it be known that we demand acknowledgement, research and CURE!
